Happy Spring game to you, Followers. Hope you’re gearing up for a great day.
If you’re catching today’s action at Joe Albi, please make sure you stop by to say hi to the Blogfathers…
And while you’re add it, please do not forget to wish brother Longball a Happy 63rd Birthday. He deserves it.
If you’re not going to the game today, like me, you can watch the game online using this link.
Beyond that, some good features out there this morning. The Spokesman caught up with Coach Paul Wulff, Brian Floyd has some interesting thoughts at the house of our almost BFFs, and we had our two bits here over the past couple of days.
Of course, the real news will come from you e.g., those who are at the game today. But, even if you are like me and watching a bit of the game on the internets, you can–INDEED YOU SHOULD–use this thread to comment on your observations both on the field and off…
And I’ll have some thoughts on the game later today after the jump..UPDATE 6:00PM Sat.
++++
Was able to catch the “first half” of today’s scrimmage and have a few thoughts–we’ll save the more in depth analysis to those who were actually there:
- Jeff Tuel did his best Eli Manning impression today. He hit Wilson for an 84 yard touch on the first play from scrimmage and was pretty much lights out from there. In fact, Tuel completed his first FIFTEEN passes until he sailed his 16th attempt out of the back of the end zone (he threw the ball away). Ultimately, Tuel was 19 for 21 for 285 yards and two touchdowns. Not bad. Not bad
- The defense did some good things after the first couple of series. As I noted on Twitter, the game started with our offense looking a lot like Texas Tech during the Leach years while our defense looked a lot lilke the Idaho State team we openned with last fall. But as the scrimmage went on, the D started to do some good things, and in particular, looked like they started to confuse our O-Line up the middle. (Caveat: I’m not sure that 50% of the plays that were ruled as sacks would have been sacks in a real game.)
- The special teams looked much better top to bottom. Furney tanked a 52 yarder but looked good besides that. Bowlin looked good on the one kickoff I saw, and had good hang time on punts.
- We looked very good at the skill posiitions. Marquess was his usual All-American self, but the Sutra X-Factor, Dominique Williams had a 120+ yard day and Bobby Ratliff looked solid. Lintz also looked great early, but (a) fumbled a ball in the endzone negating what would have been a 35 yard touchdown; and (b) dropped a sure-fire 70 yard touchdown pass from Tuel in the 2nd quarter.
- The Running backs looked decent. I liked the way that Winston carried the ball, but RG5 looked the most explosive to me.
Okay, we’ll save the rest of the analysis for the fellas. Hard to tell about what this team will look like in the fall based on all of the injuries to the D and the linebackers, but this looks like a team that will score points in the fall.
Should be a lot of fun.
All for now. Go Cougs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
