Spring Training Update – 3/4

Schilling looked impressive on 3 days rest. He pitched 3 more scoreless innings allowing 2 hits and a walk while striking out 1. Then he came out for the 4th inning and was taken out after allowing a home run to the second hitter. It’s the only run he’s allowed in his 5 1/3 innings of work. Schilling expanded his repertoire to include his breaking pitches. He needed 48 pitches through his 3 1/3 innings today, 34 of which were strikes (71%).
The offense is clicking today as well. The Red Sox hitters managed 3 hits, 3 walks and an earned run off of Johan Santana. Lugo got credit for the RBI. Manny Ramirez doesn’t appear to have his bat speed quite yet but added another walk to what is now a total of 4 in his first 8 at bats. He struck out with the bases loaded but Coco Crisp batting behind him drove in two with a single. The Red Sox have scored 6 runs so far through 6 innings. Here’s how our hitters stand overall to this point. Keep in mind that these are current through the 6th inning of today’s game.
Lugo – 9 AB, 3 H, 1 BB, 2 RBI, 1 R
Youkilis – 8 AB, 3 H, 2 2B, 2 BB, 2 R
Ortiz – 8 AB, 2 H, 2 RBI
Ramirez – 4 AB, 4 BB, 1 R
Drew – 3 AB, 1 H, 1 R
Lowell – 8 AB, 2 H, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 R
Varitek – 5 AB, 2 H, 1 BB, 1 RBI
Crisp – 5 AB, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 RBI
Pedroia – 9 AB, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 R
Pena – 11 AB, 5 H, 1 RBI, 2 R
Cora – 11 AB, 3 H, 1 BB, 2 R
Hinske – 7 AB, 3 H, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Mirabelli – 3 AB, 1 H, 1 RBI
Murphy – 8 AB, 4 H, 2 RBI, 1 R
Ellsbury – 4 AB, 1 H, 2 RBI, 1 R
I’ll provide averages, OBP, etc. once the hitters get enough at bats for those to be of use. Our reserve outfielders all appear to be hitting very well. Pedroia appears to be the only member of the lineup who is off to a slow start. Manny Ramirez is the only player listed who has yet to record a hit but he’s gotten on base in half his plate appearances.
