Spring Training Update – 3/5

The Red Sox Spring Training schedule began yesterday at 10:00 when Jon Lester played in the B-game. He pitched one perfect inning, needing only 8 pitches. Lester was even able to get his fastball up to 90 mph. An amazing feet considering the challenges Lester faced this offseason and a great testament to the 23 year old’s iron will.
At 1 pm, Josh Beckett made his second start of the spring. The game unfortunately was not telecast so I can’t tell you how he looked. He pitched 3 innings while allowing 3 hits, no runs and no walks while striking out 2. Worth noting is that it was again Doug Mirabelli behind the plate. It was Mirabelli who was calling the pitches for many of Beckett’s more successful starts last year, including Beckett’s 8 inning shutout of the Royals on July 19th.
Although the Red Sox only managed 2 hits through the first 7 innings of the game, one of them was a double by Pedroia. The Red Sox second baseman who has been off to a slow start recorded a double and a walk in 3 plate appearances today. Pedroia’s backup, Alex Cora also recorded a single in his 3 at bats to raise his average to .286. I tracked the hitter’s yesterday so today I thought I’d take a look at our bullpen arms to this point. Once all our starters have appeared twice I’ll take a look at their numbers as well.
Pineiro – 2.1 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 0 K
Donnelly – 3.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K
Timlin – 0 IP
Delcarmen – 1.2 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
Okajima – 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
Romero – 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
Tavarez – 4.0 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
Snyder – 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
Corey – 4.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
I mentioned earlier that Delcarmen risks losing his roster spot if he continues to look anything like did in his last start. Bryan Corey who’s tied for the most innings by a Red Sox reliever to this point (4.0 IP) has been one of our most effective bullpen arms. Donnelly, Okajima and Romero have also looked impressive. On the other hand, Pineiro, Delcarmen and Tavarez have looked rusty and ineffective.
