Spurs Eurobasket Round-Up: Moving to the Round of 16

For San Antonio Spurs players Pau Gasol, Davis Bertans, Joffrey Lauvergne and potential prospect Adam Hanga, the group phase of Eurobasket is officially over. All four players and the respective countries they play for have won enough games to advance to the single elimination Round of 16 phase that will begin this Saturday.

Before diving into how the Spurs affiliated players performed in days 7 and 8 of the group phase, you might want to set your alarms to get up a little early this weekend if you’d like to catch any of their elimination games. Here’s the schedule of when and who each Spurs affiliated player will be facing in the Round of 16 this weekend.

Recapping Days 7 and 8 at Eurobasket in the Group Phase

Bertans and Latvia

Thursday 09/07/2017 – Latvia 89 (4-1), Turkey 79

Bertans and Latvia finished 4-1 in the group phase and second in Group D with their final victory over Turkey. In the win, Bertans finished with nine points (4-9 shooting), four assists and two rebounds in 27 minutes.

Should Latvia defeat Montenegro Sunday, they’ll move on to face the winner of the matchup between Slovenia and Ukraine next Tuesday.

Gasol and Spain

Thursday 09/07/2017 – Spain 87 (5-0), Hungary 64

Though Hanga didn’t play in this game, it was still a historic game for Gasol, as he became the Eurobasket All-Time Leading Scorer on his way to 20 points (6-12 shooting), eight rebounds and two assists in 20 minutes. With the 20 points, Gasol has now scored 1,111 points in Eurobasket games, passing his Spurs teammate Tony Parker who previously held the record with 1,104 points.

If Gasol and Spain defeat Turkey Sunday, they’ll move on to face the winner of Germany and France next Tuesday.

Lauvergne and France

Wednesday 09/06/2017 – France 78 (3-2), Slovenia 95

Lauvergne and France were handed their second loss of Group play by Slovenia, as Lauvergne finished with seven points (3-6 shooting), one rebound and one assist in limited play, which only included 14 minutes.

As stated above, if France gets by their matchup with Germany Saturday, they’ll face the winner of Spain and Turkey next Tuesday.

Hanga and Hungary

Thursday 09/07/2017 – Hungary 64 (2-3), Spain 87

Having to face the powerhouse Spain without Hanga was a tall task for Hungary, as they fell by 23 points.

If Hungary can come out victorious Sunday against Serbia, they’ll move on to face the winner of Italy and Finland next Tuesday.
