Spurs expected to open season against Grizzlies

Later today, the full 2011-2012 66-game NBA season will be announced on NBA TV. The SanMG Antonio Spurs however, may have found out which team they will most likely play to open the season, and that is the team which ousted them in last year’s opening round playoff series — the Memphis Grizzlies (via Commercial Appeal).

The Memphis Grizzlies are expected to open the regular season Dec. 26 on the road against the San Antonio Spurs, according to a draft of the team’s 66-game schedule obtained by The Commercial Appeal.

As training camps get set to begin on Friday, both Memphis and San Antonio have some key areas that they must improve in before the season begins. For the Grizzlies, their main goal is to resign restricted free agent Marc Gasol. Shane Battier is another free agent who is reportedly interested in joining the Spurs and other contenders.

For the Spurs, the team is still keeping quiet about what it’s going to do about small forward Richard Jefferson. With free agents Caron Butler and Josh Howard expected to meet with the organization today, there are still five more small forwards that the Spurs have on their candidate list.

As reported last night, the team might also be looking at a way to add some height in the paint with Los Angeles Clippers center Chris Kaman.
