San Antonio Spurs training camp is just around the corner and a new face will be donning the silver & black. The Spurs today announced that they have signed Darrun Hilliard to a two-way contract.
With the signing, the Spurs have maxed out their two-way contracts having signed Matt Costello back in July.
Hilliard is a 6-6 shooting guard who was drafted in the second round of the 2015 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons. He spent the last two seasons with the Pistons before being involved in several trades tied to the Chris Paul to Houston trade this summer.
Any uncertainty Hilliard faced as part of being on three different teams in a 24-hour span before being waived is now over. He’ll likely spend the bulk of the season with the Spurs’ G-League affiliate in Austin, but could be called up in case of injury or if Spurs coach Gregg Popovich decides to rest other wing players on long stretches.
Through his two-year stint with the Pistons, Hilliard averaged 3.6 points and one rebound in less than 10 minutes per game.
With Hilliard on the roster, the Spurs’ roster is now up to 18 players. San Antonio can still add two more players to their training camp roster, however, the final roster must be trimmed to 15 players before the opening game of the regular season.
