By now everyone has heard of the reported trade rumor involving San Antonio Spurs guard Tony Parker. Reports had him being traded to the Sacramento Kings, or Toronto Raptors for their high draft picks in tomorrow’s NBA Draft.
Some speculated this was due to Parker’s comments he made to the French media on the Spurs’ championship window, the age of the team and how he is the team’s best trade asset.
However, Spurs GM R.C. Buford said the Spurs are not shopping anyone while another Spurs’ official said they were just gauging the interest from teams calling about Parker.
Today, at Steve Nash’s Showdown in Chinatown charity soccer event in New York City, Parker spoke on the rumor.
During the media session, Parker was asked if he wanted to be traded and said he loves San Antonio and hopes he can stay with the team. He understood the NBA is a business but reiterated his hopes to stay with the Spurs.
Parker also said he has been with San Antonio for 10 years and reminded the media he resigned with the team for four more years.
As the media session continued, I got to further ask Parker on the trade rumor.
Jeff: Tony were you shocked about the trade rumors?
Tony: The NBA is a business and I can’t control that. I’m not even worried about that. You can’t control that. Hopefully I can stay in San Antonio. I love it over there.
Jeff: Have R.C. (Buford) or Pop (Spurs coach Gregg Popovich) talked to you since the trade rumors came out?
Tony: No.
Parker also said he hopes to still be a Spur come Friday after the NBA Draft.
Will Parker be a Spur after the draft remains to be seen. On one hand you have Buford shooting down any reports of the team shopping him and on the other Parker saying the team has not contacted him regarding said rumor.
As they say, stay tuned!
