San Antonio Spurs fans showed why they’re one of the best, most loyal fan bases in the NBA, not to mention how desperate they were for the season to start. Aside from selling out the AT&T center for opening night against the Memphis Grizzlies, the game was the highest rated primetime program on Monday night.
This was even more impressive considering there was a Monday Night Football game between the New Orleans Saints and the Atlanta Falcons with playoff implications, not to mention a 27-year old record being crushed by Drew Brees. Twitter was abuzz as Brees approached the record but Spurs fans kept their TVs on their team as the Spurs cruised to an opening night, 95-82 victory over the team that knocked them out of the playoffs last year.
“We often say that we have the best fans in the NBA and, to me, this proves that point,” said Mike Kickirillo, director of broadcasting for Spurs Sports and Entertainment. “To beat out Monday Night Football, on a record-setting night by Drew Brees, is a tribute to the passion our fans have for the Spurs.” (via Spurs press release)
San Antonio proves once again that the heart of the city belongs to the Spurs.
