According to Jorge Sierra at HoopsHype, the Spurs have signed former Baylor point guard Curtis Jerrells to a make-good, partially guaranteed contract.
You may be asking yourself, “who the heck is Curtis Jerrells and why would the Spurs sign him?” I’ll answer both in the next few paragraphs.
This seems like a training camp signing to me, and he’ll likely compete with Jack McClinton and a few other players the Spurs bring in to battle for the third point guard spot.
For a player that went to Baylor and calls my backyard of Austin his home, I’m surprised I had not yet heard of him.
The 6-1 Jerrells put up some pretty decent numbers last year at Baylor, and although you may scoff at that claim, these are probably my ideal stats for a point guard and then some. He averaged 16.3 points, 4.9 assists. 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game. And while that may not be so impressive for a mid-major player, Jerrells did it in the Big 12.
Unfortunately for Jerrells, he’s a bit undersized to play anything but point guard, so dreams of putting another speedy guard, who has a knack for getting steals, in the same backcourt with George Hill, as R.C. Buford talked about with McClinton, is unlikely to happen, if Jerrells makes it to the team in the first place.
This summer he played for the Mavs summer league team, averaging 5 points and one rebound in just nine minutes per game, and he was reportedly also invited to Pistons training camp.
Aside from his quickness and a great first step, Jerrells is aggressive going to the basket and can finish in traffic, but he needs to improve in a few areas, most importantly taking care of the ball and looking to pass more. At this point he looks more fit for a D’Antoni or Don Nelson run and gun system, but we’ll see exactly what he can bring to the Spurs system in training camp.
