Spurs waive Hassell and Zeller, roster at 13

After trying to make his way onto the San Antonio Spurs’ 2011-12′ roster, it seems forward Frank Hassell’s chances have been cut short. According to the Spurs’ official site, Hassell and center Luke Zeller have been waived by the team.

The San Antonio Spurs today announced that they have waived forward Frank Hassell and center Luke Zeller.

Hassell appeared in two preseason games, averaging 2.0 points and 1.5 rebounds in 10.0 minutes.

Zeller saw four minutes of action vs. Houston on Dec. 21 handing out two assists.

The roster now stands at 13.

Though the Spurs now have the league required roster set at 13 players, shooting guard Gary Neal is still on the injured list after having an appendectomy procedure done two weeks ago.

The regular season is set to begin the day after Christmas on December 26, when the Spurs will host the team that eliminated them from last season’s playoffs, the Memphis Grizzlies.

With camp invitees Gani Lawal, Hassell, and Zeller all waived, the team now boasts the same front-line that was eliminated by Memphis last season with Tim Duncan at starting power forward, DeJuan Blair at starting center, and Tiago Splitter alongside Matt Bonner to come off of the bench. Antonio McDyess was the other big man on the playoff roster but he has since announced his retirement.
