The San Antonio Spurs announced Thursday morning the team has waived forward/center Ryan Richards.
There was no reason provided why Richards was waived, but he did have a history of not being able to stay with a team for a long duration of time in his professional career, as he’s played basketball in several countries over the last few years.
The Spurs drafted Richards in the second round of the 2010 NBA draft, and with Richards being officially waived, the team will now lose his draft rights, which makes him eligible to sign with any NBA team once he clears waivers.
The Spurs’ training camp roster now sits at 19 players with Richards off the roster. 14 players are currently on guaranteed contracts, which means Ryan Arcidiacono, Bryn Forbes, Patricio Garino, Nicolas Laprovittola and Joel Anthony remain the five players competing at training camp for the final roster spot on the team.
The Spurs must trim their roster to at least 15 players by the opening game of the season on October 25 against the Golden State Warriors.
The depth chart below shows the Spurs’ players at their positions and how the frontcourt lineup stacks up after the departure of Richards.
