St. Louis Cardinals Rank As 38th Most Valuable Franchise In Sports

The St. Louis Cardinals have made Forbes’ list of ‘50 Most Valuable Sports Teams‘ for 2016.

Forbes’ team values are enterprise values (equity plus debt) based on current stadium deals (unless a new stadium is pending).

Ranking 38th, the Cardinals had a year over year gain of 14% and an estimated value of 1.6B dollars, ahead of NFL franchises like Arizona Cardinals and Kansas City Chiefs.

Here’s what Forbes had to say:

The Cardinals signed a 15-year television deal with Fox Sports Midwest last year that starts in 2018. The combined rights fees and upfront bonus to the team are worth more than $1 billion. In addition, the team got a 30% stake in the regional sports network. Ratings on FS Midwest were up 31% last year and ranked second-best in baseball.

The list includes franchises from the NFL (27 teams), MLB (7), NBA (8) and soccer (8). No NHL, NASCAR or F1 teams made the cut.

The Dallas Cowboys are the most valuable franchise in the world, claiming the top spot for a non-European soccer team for the first time. They’re valued at 4B and had an operating profit of 270M (!) during the 2014 season.

The Yankees are the most valuable MLB team at 3.4B (up 6% from last year).
