How did that Ryan Callahan trade work out for the Rangers? The man they got back, Martin St. Louis, scored six minutes into the first overtime Sunday night at Madison Square Garden. The Rangers defeated the Canadiens 3-2 and took a 3-1 series lead in the Eastern Conference Finals.
The story of this game was the number of penalties taken by both teams, but especially the Rangers. In total, they took nine (one offset with a penalty taken by Markov), but the Canadiens could only convert on one of their powerplays.
Carl Hagelin opened the scoring on a breakaway on a Habs powerplay. PK Subban had abandoned his point to chip the puck in deep, and Boyle found Hagelin streaking through that spot.
The Habs kept coming back, and Francis Bouillon tied the game on a 2 on 1 rush in the second period. Bouillon was back in the line-up tonight replacing Nathan Beaulieu.
It looked like the second period would end in a tie until the Habs bungled a line change. Derick Brassard made the Canadiens pay on a slapshot off of a two line pass from Dan Girardi.
Once again, the Canadiens came back strong. PK Subban scored on a powerplay goal two minutes into the third period.
St. Louis’ goal developed from the Habs’ inability to get the puck out of their defensive zone. Then, a beautiful pass led to St. Louis having a chance right in front of Dustin Tokarski, and he did not miss.
Game 5 will be Tuesday night at Bell Centre in Montreal. The Canadiens must win or go home, while a win for the Rangers will propel them to the Stanley Cup Finals.
