<![CDATA[Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Tuesday that Stan Van Gundy is in serious talks with the Detroit Pistons to become their next head coach and president of basketball operations.

Detroit and Van Gundy are discussing a deal centered on five years and $35 million for him to become president and coach, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Golden State officials met with Van Gundy on Monday in Florida and left convinced he was leaning strongly toward the offer of total control in Detroit. Golden State isn’t willing to make an allowance for Van Gundy to have final say on player personnel. The Warriors would make him one of the higher paid coaches in the NBA, but Detroit owner Tom Gores is willing to do “whatever it takes,” one source said, to recruit Van Gundy.

Van Gundy as head coach owns the sixth highest win percentage ALL-TIME (.641), which makes one wonder why he’s been out of the game since being fired by the Orlando Magic in 2012.

According to Pistons beat writer Vincent Goodwill, however, a deal is close and could happen in the next couple days:

For what it’s worth, Van Gundy once ripped Pistons fans as the nastiest in the game when he was the coach of the Miami Heat (in 2005, after the Ron Artest incident).
