Normally the State House of Representatives is busy passing laws, being advocates and working on improving the state.
But apparently, a few members of the Texas House of Representatives decided to add “smack talk” to their to-do list today.
According to the Dallas Morning News, a few Texas House members that are Dallas Mavericks fans decided to rub their championship in the face of the San Antonio Spurs fans, including Speaker Joe Straus.
Leading the pre-parade conga line on the House floor were Reps. Helen Giddings, D-Dallas, and Joe Driver, R-Garland (right, 2010 DMN photo).
Giddings asked Speaker Joe Straus, R-San Antonio, if he was “aware of the champions.”
Straus, a San Antonio Spurs fan, manfully owned up.
“Being from San Antonio, unfortunately, I’m aware of it,” he said of the Mavericks’ first NBA championship. Courteous as ever, Straus congratulated the Mavs.
Driver then unfurled a Mavs title T shirt from the front mic. “I’ve paid my money” as a 31-year season ticketholder, he said. And then some trash talking commenced.
Leave it to our San Antonio representatives to remind the Dallas Mavericks fans that the Mavs have some catching up to do before they are mentioned in the same breath as the Spurs.
That brought to the back mic Rep. Jose Menendez, D-San Antonio.
“Are you aware of how many championships reside in the city of San Antonio and Bexar County?” he asked.
Driver, who acknowledged he’s lost monetary wagers to Spurs fans in the past, said his wallet escaped damage this year.
“This time, they weren’t anywhere around,” he said of the Spurs.
Menendez: “We look forward to you trying to catch up.”
While we would normally expect our constituents to be hard at work while on the house floor, I think they did a fine job in representing San Antonio when it came to defending the Spurs. All in a day’s work.
