Staying positive

The Pirates haven’t won in a week, and they’re somehow searching for their 40th win in mid-August, and they’re in generally torturous to watch. BUT! But their most interesting pitcher, James McDonald is on the mound against the Marlins tonight and hopefully at some point during or after the game there will be very good news regarding Jameson Taillon and Stetson Allie, and so that makes the Pirates a 39-win-in-August-team worth paying attention to tonight.

McDonald was superb in his first start as a Pirate and good in his second start, though bad defense and a high pitch count ended up costing him. As I noted after his last start, I don’t think his changeup was quite as good last week as it was in his debut against the Rockies and it remains a pitch to keep an eye on. In any case, I’m excited because I haven’t really had a chance to watch him pitch at all since the trade.

As usual, remember that this is the game thread and any draft-related news will get its own post (probably more than one, actually). First pitch tonight is 7:05; Clemente/Cangelosi is after the jump.

Not sure what this is? Check here and here. Short version: in the comments pick the Pirates you think will be most and least valuable in today’s game. If you haven’t jumped aboard yet, it’s been a lot of fun so far and now’s as good a time as any to join in.

Update when I get home from lab.
