The Steelers released offensive tackle Mike Adams Thursday, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, which brings a warped “Blind Side” story line to an end.
Adams started just 20 games after being chosen in the second round of the 2012 draft. He spent all of last season on the physically-unable-to-perform list after having back surgery last summer and was released with a failed physical designation. Adams became expendable when the Steelers drafted LSU offensive tackle Jerald Hawkins in the fourth round on Saturday.
The Steelers had taken Adams off their draft board after he tested positive for marijuana at the NFL Scouting Combine. But Adams, who grew up a Steelers fan in Ohio, begged them to reconsider. He was taken with the 56th overall pick.
The Adams narrative took another bizarre twist when he was stabbed in June of 2013, although the men charged in the incident were acquitted partly because Adams’ blood alcohol level was found to be .185.
Kelvin Beachum, drafted in the seventh round in 2012, turned out to be the Steelers’ left tackle until a torn ACL ended his 2015 season. Undrafted Alejandro Villanueva took over and will compete with free-agent signing Ryan Harris for the job next season.
Adams, meanwhile, is off the Steelers’ board for good.
