According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, the Red Sox are close to acquiring Steve Trachsel from the New York Mets who after throwing a gem was banished to the bullpen. Steve has demanded a trade. The Mets are asking for a relief pitcher, and also would consider a first baseman – John Olerud or Roberto Petagine. (Apparently, Kevin Millar is not available.)
Trachsel has really turned himself into a good pitcher the last three years, a big part of it being a lower home-run rate and less hits. Walks have stayed steady and strikeouts have actually stayed the same, so it looks as if Steve is playing smarter.
