It’s not uncommon for sports fans to compare and contrast athletes and their skills. It’s not even unusual for them to compare athletes from different sports to each other. Sports Illustrated has issued their first Fittest 50 list in an effort to answer an age old question. Just who is the fittest elite athlete out there? Lightning fans will see some familiar names on the list. Bolts captain Steven Stamkos came in at the #38 position.
The athletes were graded on a 40 point rating system based on four criteria: strength, speed, endurance and agility. Each category was based on a scale of 0-10 with a perfect score being 40. LeBron James took the number one spot with a perfect score. Cristiano Rinaldo and Usain Bolt rounded out the top three with scores of 38.5 and 36.5 respectfully.
So how did Stamkos’ score stack up? He received a 6 for speed, a 5.5 for strength, a 5.5 for agility and a 7.5 for endurance for a grand total of 24.5. We’re a bit biased, but those numbers for speed and agility seem criminally low. (Photo/ Sue Ferlita)
Ten sports were represented in the final list of 50 with seven in the top ten. Football was the most well represented with 17 players making the cut. Including Stamkos only two other hockey players made the list: Zdeno Chara of the Boston Bruins at #37 and Martin St. Louis of the New York Rangers at #21.
