On Monday, Florida State sophomore outfielder D.J. Stewart became the seventh Seminole to earn ACC Player of the Year and the fourth outfielder.
Despite a suspension for his role in a benches-clearing incident against rival Florida earlier in the season, Stewart leads the ACC in RBIs, batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage and doubles. Stewart also ranks in the top 10 in the conference in home runs, runs scored, walks and total bases.
Earlier in the year, Stewart was named to the Team USA National Collegiate Team and against Wake Forest, set a new school-record for reaching base in 58 straight games.
In addition to winning player of the year, Stewart was joined on the All-ACC first team by three teammates. Corner infielders John Nogowski and Jose Brizuela each earned nods as first-teamers as did starting pitcher Luke Weaver. On the All-ACC third team for Florida State were reliever Gage Smith and outfielder Josh Delph.
Stewart becomes the second Florida State outfielder in three years to earn the conference’s player of the year award. The last Seminole to do so was James Ramsey back in 2012. Stewart and the five other Seminoles to earn All-ACC honors will return to the diamond on Wednesday as FSU takes on either North Carolina or N.C. State in the ACC Tournament in Greensboro.
