What?
You didn’t think I wasn’t going to chime in on the “We miss #48” OR “Get over it! He’s old and TBN is obsessed with him” debate, did you? Please. I love this topic. I love relishing the days of old when it comes to our sports teams. Remember when may be the lowest form of conversation, but Buffalo fans love it. Ask the radio guys who always seem to roll out the nostalgia topics for happiness/sadness at least twice a month.
I’m pretty sure you know where I stand on the Briere conversation. I miss the bastard, but more importantly, I miss a player you can actually believe in without needing propaganda and hype. I’ve been saying it for years, the Sabres lack a clutch performer like him and need to find someone or they will not come close to winning the Cup. Vanek, Roy, or Stafford will never be Briere. I don’t care how many Sabres statistical tweets or Nick Mendola pieces come out in an effort to discredit Briere or make our guys seem on his level. They are not even close. Even if the player measurements seem to be the same in your presentation, there is a big difference between banging the starting QB at Polk High and hooking up with Mark Sanchez.
Not to pick on Nick, but if you wanna use the ex-girlfriend analogy, I will do the same. Briere is the ex-girlfriend I see on TV every night who is living the dream, happily ever after while I’m stuck on Match.com looking at porn bots or trying to make a prostitute into a housewife.
Sticking with love, I think the fans and media members who just piss on people who bring up Briere are ones who are so madly in love with the Sabres that they resemble bad parents. We blame the teachers, the media, their friends, the schools, the injuries and everyone else for their kids/Sabres problems without acknowledging that the kids resemble Telly or the kid from Problem Child. We try to maintain that they are the ones who are making the Sabres look foolish and are just picking on them.
Here is the main reason why I miss Danny or a player like him. It is because I hate this team. Yes, I hate the way the Sabres are constructed. I don’t like Derek Roy. I don’t like Drew Stafford. I’m bored of Darcy/Lindy. I’m indifferent about Thomas Vanek and Ryan Miller. I like Foligno/Ennis, but they are just too young to know if they are going to be the 2nd coming or at least above average and not some fan/media creation. I just don’t feel anything for these guys and I’m sick and tired of feeling forced to cheer for a team because they represent my hometown or because my friends love them or because I have a bunch of awesome memories that seemed to have happened 2 decades ago. You can throw in the Bills here, too. I would actually like to cheer for a team because they are winning. Yes, call me a bandwagon fan but I’m sick of hearing people stick up for these average franchise.
I’m just sick of eating a mediocrity sandwich with a side of stagnant. I’m sick of winning preseason titles for hype only to then come up completely short when it counts. I’m sick of hearing how the media is too tough on the Sabres. I’m sick of not focusing on what is wrong with this team while trying to find different discussions to avoid the major problem.
That’s why I tweet a snarky comment every time Briere scores a playoff goal. I think everyone should remember what it’s like to have a real player in this town. That’s what we should want for our team and players.
Now, how can I get over this? Easy. Win a few playoff rounds and get me Briere 2.0. How about the team scoring more playoff goals (33) than Briere has (37) since he left? That’s it. Not rocket science. Once you do that, I’ll shut up. I’ll move on. I’ll actually like this team. This isn’t just negative Buffalo fan here talking because I think if this was the same situation in other cities, fans would be envious. Just stop telling me to get over it. I can’t get over it because I’m alone here with the same crap and no hockey girlfriend. Yes, I’m beating a dead horse, but it beats taking a ride on a giant jackass that seems to not know where the exit to the barn is at.
