Straight Outta Compton – Raps Select DeRozan at #9

Well most mock drafts had DeRozan headed to Toronto and they were right.  Most of the hype about DeRozan is that he has the most “upside” from all of the players in the draft and we’ll see if this holds true.  Colangelo has a knack for picking up good #9 picks and let’s just hope DeRozan pans out for the Raps.

Analysis: ESPN hyped him as having “the most potential of anyone in the draft,” which is a code for all sorts of potential issues. Your classic AAU star who during his brief tenure at USC could either star or disappear game to game. This one could go either way, but in this draft, especially for the Raptors, why not go with upside? — Dan Wetzel

Jack Armstrong

He’s a bit raw and I expect him to have his share of challenges early on but he’s got the tools to take his game upward as he moves on. I think he can be a guy that plays decent minutes as a rookie and be in the playing rotation early on.

DeRozan has as much upside as anyone in the draft. He’s long and athletic and he can be a spectacular scorer. He needs to get stronger and build his confidence, but the Raptors made this pick for the future. With Chris Bosh possibly leaving this summer or next, DeRozan can be part of a new core with Andrea Bargnani.
