Strange Twist of Fate

“How Bizarre, How Bizarre, How Bizarre! Ooh baby (Ooh baby)! It’s making me crazy (It’s making me crazy)! Every time I look around (Look around). Every time I look around.” From the song “How Bizarre” by OMC.  And in a rather bizarre twist of fate, both favorites – Brazil and Italy – lost semi-final matches convincingly at the Women’s World Volleyball Championship.

Semi-final Number 1 – USA sweeps Brazil

In a match marred by officiating controversy, USA played determined Volleyball and downed Brazil 25-18, 29-27, and 25-20 to advance to the finals of the FIVB Women’s World Championship. USA dominated the first set, came from behind in the second after overcoming an early Brazilian lead and fighting off two set points, and then cruised to victory in the third set.  USA out-hit Brazil, 52 to 41 kills, and out-dug them, 53 to 42 digs; however, Brazil out-blocked USA 7 blocks to 5.

Semi-final Number 2 – China Quiets Crowd and Defeats Italy

China also played determined Volleyball as it silenced the predominantly Italian crowd and overcame host Italy in four sets by a score of 25-21, 25-20, 20-25, and 30-28. The crowd of 12,000 plus spectators was effectively neutralized by the efficient and inspired play of China as they dominated the first two sets.  Italy rebounded and won the third set, building momentum for the fourth set.  In a roller coaster fourth set, however, China pulled out the victory by a score of 30 – 28 to advance to tomorrow’s finals against USA.

Finals Analysis

In a match between teams which easily have two of the most famous Volleyball coaches in the world (Karch Kiraly for USA and Lang Ping for China), the final result and the champion will probably be determined by the basic fundamentals – serving and passing.  To win, both teams must serve accurately and aggressively while effectively passing the other team’s serve to allow for “in system” offense.  I’m sure both teams will be “fired up” and ready to go while both coaches will undoubtedly have a specific game plan to win.  It will be one terrific Volleyball match and match-up.
