With summer upon us inhabitants in the Northern Hemisphere, you’re probably in the market for some suggestions on some good sports books to read this summer (do people still read books?). Well I got one I can recommend – Stumbling on Wins.
Stumbling on Wins is the follow up to the very popular Wages of Wins, where economics professors break down how and why things happen in sports based on numbers. And if a book with a lot of math in it isn’t your idea of a light summer read, fear not – Stumbling on Wins is a quick, easy read. Among the topics covered in it are whether coaches actually make a difference in terms of wins and losses and player performance in the NBA, what is the age that NBA players “peak” at in terms of performance and whether the mystical “hot hand” really does exist in basketball.
You can see why the authors of these books have a lot of critics because they rationally argue against many beliefs sports fans hold near and dear to their hearts. When something you believe in is exposed as a myth, you tend to get defensive and angry. But can you really argue with numbers? We’ll let you be the judge.
