Well, it was another big victory for Victoria. I was particularly impressed by their ability to hold Motagua’s Nasciemento goalless in their 2-0 shutout and maintain a firm grasp on third place in the Liga Nacional. The problem, however, is whether or not they will be able to break through and overtake Marathon or Olimpia. It’s hard for a small market squad to compete with the larger programs from Tegucigulpa to be sure, but there are some obvious changes that Victoria needs to make.
The first change that needs to be made is the addition of a striker. For a team that wishes to compete, having Junior Izzaguirre be the only legitimate scoring threat is absolutely unacceptable. It’s certainly time for Los Lecheros to look for that extra burst of offense, even if it does mean raiding lesser leagues, like Nicaragua or El Salvador.
The other thing that Victoria could try is opening the game up a little bit. Their trapping style means that any game they are in is going to be tight, as evidenced by their 3 goal differential for the season. It’s like Las Jaibas Bravas are trying not to lose, rather than trying to win. Sure, their five draws at this point are fine, but you have to think they are 10 points left on the table.
If Victoria is going to compete and reclaim their spot at the top of the Liga Nacional, they need to overtake the squads from Tegucigulpa with more aggressive play. How long until Cesar Nastash Butto realizes this?
