SWC 10 Postmortem

Frisco-based Supreme Warrior Championship have experienced, and seen it all in their young life as a viable mixed martial arts promotion here in North Texas.  From issues with the TDLR (the overseeing body for combative sports in Texas), to apathetic fight fans, SWC has continued to fight on, with the premise of building a promotion that highlights young MMA talent.  This past Saturday night, SWC put on their first card of 2010, and arguably, it was their most ambitious one to date.  Of course, any promotion that features the return of WEC title contender Marcus Hicks, a proud North Texan, along with highly touted Fort Worth fighter Johnny Bedford was sure to raise more than a few eyebrows.

But while SWC 10 lacked the palatable energy that SWC 9 provided, by all accounts, the card was a resounding success.  Hicks proved why his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is some of the best in the business, by submitting the extremely tough Anthony Macias.  Bedford was given a stern test in Greg Jackson trained Ryan Webb and Davis Sylvester III (who is also one of the major partners in SWC) returned to the cage in impressive fashion.  All in all, those in attendance were treated to a solid fight card, and rekindled faith in SWCs vision.

North Texas Fisticuffs’ Unofficial Awards for SWC 10

Fight of the Night – Johnny Bedford vs. Ryan Webb.  We all know how good Bedford is, but Ryan Webb’s spirited effort against the F3 Fight Team veteran was both commendable and awe-inspiring.  In the end, Bedford’s superior experience and submission acumen carried him to victory with a third round kimora, but give props to Ryan Webb who made Bedford work for the victory.

KO of the Night – Brian Pierce grabs this honor, partially because he was the only fighter at SWC 10 to not pull off a submission victory, but also because he seemed downright giddy to swap leather with Jose Flores.  After falling Flores with a leg kick, Pierce displayed all the killer instinct of a rabid wolverine in smashing Flores into the mat.

Submission of the Night – Hicks’ armbar was impressive, but just falls short of Davis Sylvester’s vice griped guillotine choke on Mark Reyes.  Sylvester clamped down a choke so tight I was worried that Reyes’ head would pop off.
