A Bench statue will be awesome
“He was a great hitter,” said sculptor Tom Tsuchiya, “but he is known as baseball’s greatest catcher, so once we focused on that, it was ‘OK, so what’s the (pose)?’ I originally came up with the idea of him catching a popup, but then I realized (the viewers of the statue) would be looking up at his nostrils, and we didn’t want that.”
One can understand the original concept, however. Nobody ever made popup-catching look easier than Bench, who would flick them from a dugout railing or a looming backstop as though flicking dust from a tabletop.
