I don’t care if you’ve got the best pitching staff ever assembled in the history of baseball… if almost half of your starting lineup is batting a combined .184 – at best – mediocrity is in the future.

At worst, bad things.

The Cardinals lost to a bad Mets team last night in New York 3-2. They tried to snatch a victory from the jaws of defeat late. A play at the plate that was challenged, but not overturned, sealed the Cardinals fate and pushed their record towards an uninspired 12-10 (4 games back of the Brewers).

Less than a week remains in April and the Cardinals are gripping – hard – at the plate. It’s one thing to lose games to the Brewers or Nationals on the road. Those are good teams. But the Mets? They might be over .500 now, but will not be by the end of the 2014 campaign.

The Birds finish a long road trip this afternoon in Flushing Meadows. And they look for the split.

Let’s hope that once the four players mentioned above get back to the friendly confines of Busch Stadium they can start to dig themselves out of the holes that are becoming ever deeper.
