3-point shooting was the difference on Sunday night as Syracuse handled Florida State, 70-57, to improve to 12-4 on the season and a perfect 3-0 in ACC play. Trevor Cooney went 7-for-11 from deep and led all scorers with 28 points in the victory for the Orange.
As a team, the Orange shot 10-for-17 from downtown while Florida State was a dismal 2-for-16. Syracuse hit the 3-ball early to race to 35-22 halftime lead. The Orange used a 6-2 run to extend the lead to 17 early in the second half. FSU twice drew to within nine, but could get no closer.
Rakeem Christmas didn’t have a great night from the field, but finished with 14 points and game-highs of 11 rebounds and 5 blocks. Michael Gbinije added 11 points and 9 rebounds for the Orange.
After shooting 52 percent against Virginia Tech on Tuesday, the Seminoles were held below 40 percent shooting for the game. Xavier Rathan-Mayes paced FSU with 14 points and 2 steals while Boris Bojanovsky was the only Seminole to score in double-figures with 10 points on 5-for-5 shooting. Leading scorer Montay Brandon was held to 9 points, but led Florida State (9-7, 1-2 ACC) with 7 rebounds.
Florida State will remain on the road as it visits Pittsburgh on Wednesday. Syracuse looks to remain perfect in ACC play as it hosts Wake Forest on Tuesday night.
