FINAL: Pittsburgh Pirates 4, St. Louis Cardinals 3
Takeaways
- Jameson Taillon had a solid outing tonight tossing six innings of four hit ball while surrendering two earned runs. His only blemish came in the second inning when Jose Martinez lined a two-run homer down the left field line after a leadoff walk. Other than that, Taillon was on his game striking out seven batters and walking two. After a less than stellar start in his last outing, Taillon bounced back nicely tonight tossing six innings, his longest start since coming off the DL. Taillon threw 104 pitches, 65 of which were strikes. His seven strikeouts were the most he has thrown in a game this year.
- Jaso gave the Pirates a 4-3 lead in his only at bat by smashing a moon shot home run in the ninth inning. He now has five home runs on the season with three coming as a pinch hitter. Josh Bell hit his 14th home run of the year with a solo shot in the second inning. David Freese also had a clutch game tying RBI single in the eighth inning.
- Rivero got five huge outs to end the game. After Juan Nicasio got into trouble in the eighth inning, Rivero cleaned things up. After the Pirates got him a lead in the ninth inning, he slammed the door shut to give the Pirates a victory.
- Clint Hurdle made the right call to get Rivero in the game when he did. He also made the right call to double switch Jaso into the game giving him the opportunity to win it. Clint pushed all the right buttons tonight.
Throwaways
- Daniel Hudson’s struggles continued as he gave up a go-ahead home run to Paul Dejong in the seventh inning. This is his second straight outing giving up a go-ahead home run in the seventh. He has given up six home runs in 31 innings this year. Hudson now has an ERA of 5.28 on the season.
- Juan Nicasio didn’t have his best stuff tonight lasting 0.2 innings giving up a hit and walk. He left the game in the eighth inning with runners on first and third with one out. Luckily Rivero came in and got out of the jam.
- The offense overall wasn’t great tonight registering only five hits. As a whole, the offense only has nine hits over the past two games. A win makes things nice, but the offense needs to get it going once again.
Line Of the Day
