FINAL: Pittsburgh Pirates 4, Milwaukee Brewers 3

Takeaways

  • Chad Kuhl looked as though he was on his way to a quality start before the rain delay ended his night.  Nonetheless, Kuhl was able to maneuver through three innings of scoreless baseball.  He struck out two batters and gave up two hits.  After the delay, Wade LeBlanc came on and tossed three scoreless innings.  He gave up two hits while striking out four.  In the bottom of the fourth, LeBlanc helped his own cause by slapping a two out RBI single to left field.  At the time, it gave the Pirates a 3-0 lead.  Felipe Rivero pitched a tidy 1.1 innings and record a strikeout.  His ERA is down to 0.52 on the season.  Daniel Hudson came in for the ninth and had a scoreless inning.  After a few rough outings, Hudson was able to have an easy, quick inning.
  • Josh Bell has been hitting well lately and continued that trend tonight.  He hit the ball hard three times going 2-4 with a home run and a double.  He is now tied for the team lead with five home runs.  Over his past 17 games, Bell is 18-56 with five home runs and two doubles.  That is a .321 batting average over that span.  Gregory Polanco also had a nice game going 2-4 with his team leading eighth double.  Being that was he was hitless in three games at Cincinnati, it was nice to see Polanco have two hard line drives fall for hits.

Throwaways

  • Juan Nicasio struggled a bit in the top of the seventh inning and was unable to record three outs.  After giving up two hits and a walk, he was relieved by Rivero who recored the final out.
  • Andrew McCutchen went 0-4 tonight thus ending his 23-game on base streak.  It was a nice streak but at the same time McCutchen is now batting .226 on the season.  Josh Harrison, Jose Osuna, Alen Hanson, and Jordy Mercer were also hitless tonight.
