Takeaways And Throwaways- New York Mets pummel Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pirates were sunk by the Pittsburgh kid, as Neil Walker clubbed a pair of homers in an 8-1 loss Friday night.

Takeaways

• Daniel Hudson retired all six batters he faced, striking out three. He has faced the minimum in four of his last five appearances (5.1 innings).
• Gregory Polanco hit a home run and a single in his first start back from the disabled list.

Throwaways

• The Mets stacked their lineup with lefties, and they feasted on Chad Kuhl. Six of the eight southpaw or switch-swingers recorded a hit off Kuhl, combining for 17 total bases in 19 at-bats. On the year, lefties are now slashing .340/.406/.660 against Kuhl.
• The defense may not have committed an error, but they looked bad. Jordy Mercer failed to make a play on a slow roller by Curtis Granderson in the second or a pop fly over his shoulder off the bat of Neil Walker in the sixth. Both hits were good for an RBI. Polanco showed his rust in the field in the sixth, pulling up short on a Lucas Duda bloop and letting it go by him. It ended up being a two RBI double.
• David Freese wore the golden sombrero, going 0-4 with four strikeouts. Three of them were on three pitches.
• Mets’ catcher Rene Rivera literally threw his bat away on a swing and a miss in the ninth. A fan in the front row picked it up, but had to return it back to Rivera. Rivera struck out on the next pitch. Karma.

Line of the Day

Let’s give a hand to the Pittsburgh Kid, who went 3-5 with two home runs and 4 RBI. His second home run was good for his 500th career RBI.
