Last night’s loss was disappointing, but the Pirates still have a chance to take two out of three from the Reds in this road series at Great American Ballpark. Tonight they turn to Kevin Correia, who’s been stubbornly mediocre in starts against the Cubs and Brewers since I recommended taking him out of the rotation a couple of weeks ago, helping the Pirates to two wins. He allowed three homers in 12 innings in those two starts, though, and the Reds are fourth in the NL in homers at Great American Ballpark is homer-friendly kind of place.
The good news for the Pirates is that Mike Leake hasn’t been very good this year, either, though he has been looking better of late. The Pirates drew four walks off of him in seven innings to beat the Reds 3-2 back on May 5th, and since then Leake has a 3.90 ERA in 27 2/3 innings stretched out over five starts. His control’s improved a bit over that span, though, and he’ll probably present the Pirates with a bit more of a challenge than he did a month ago.
