JSOnline.com, via Tom Haudricourt’s blog, is reporting that the Brewers will sign and add reliever Julian Tavarez to the 25-man roster by Tuesday’s game against the Braves.
With the return of David Riske by the end of the week, and closer Eric Gagne shortly thereafter, it would appear that the major league tenures of Zack Jackson, Mark DiFelice, and Tim Dillard will soon be coming to an end, at least for now.
Only Dillard was relieving in Nashville, and would appear to have an edge to being the last to go; Jackson, although a starter for the Sounds this year, is also left-handed, and would also seem to have more value to the parent club at this time than DiFelice…so my guess is DiFelice gets sent down first, followed by Jackson, and then Dillard.
Tavarez, a righty, just turned 35 and had appeared in 9 games for Boston this year before being released. He’s been above his career 4.44 ERA every year since 2005, when he pitched in 74 games for the Cards and compiled a 3.43 ERA that year. Before joining the Red Sox in ’06, Tavarez spent nine consecutive years in the National League; Tavarez also made 23 starts for the Red Sox in ’07, providing an additional option at starting pitcher should Dave Bush continue to struggle.
Also, former Brewer reliever Geremi Gonzalez was killed by a lightning strike in Venezuela on Sunday.
