Ohio State
The Buckeyes rebounded nicely from the tough loss to South Carolina with a win over the Cleveland State Vikings on Wednesday 96-78. The Buckeyes have four players averaging in double figures right now with Kelsey Mitchell (25.3), Shayla Cooper (13.0), Stephanie Mavunga (12.7) and Sierra Calhoun (11.3). Mitchell is already over 1,000 points (1,838) and Mavunga is only 68 away from the mark. Mavunga is averaging a double-double with 11 rebounds per game so far on the season.
Long Island University – Brooklyn
The Blackbirds are coming off a 9-21 season and were picked to finish fifth in the NEC. They opened the season with a 68-47 setback at home to Army and then last Tuesday fell by a similar score, 64-48, to George Mason. Senior Shanovia Dove is averaging 14.5 points, 3.0 rebounds and 3.0 three-pointers per game. Aja Boyd leads the team in rebounding at 7.0 rpg as well as blocks with four and has scored 19 total points. Stephanie Oliver is in her second season at the helm of the program after a successful two-year stint as Seton Hall’s top assistant coach.
Outlook
The Buckeyes will have to continue their improvement on defense against the hot shooting Dove but will need to pick up the pace in the three-point shooting area. In their last outing against Cleveland State everyone but Mitchell was 0-11 from beyond the arc until a make by Cooper in the fourth. They finished the night 8-13. Mitchell has an opportunity to break Caity Matter’s (270) career three-point mark and needs five to do so. If she continues her season’s pace whe will own the NCAA career record when she is done. It is currently held by Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis of UConn. If she has the type of game she needs to set the new mark, LIU-Brooklyn will be in trouble early and often.
This is the first match-up between the two teams and also the first time Kevin McGuff has faced LIU-Brooklyn.
The Buckeyes will be off for almost a week after a four game home stand in a weeks time. They will play in the FGCU Golf Coast Showdown next Friday and tip-off against FGCU at 5:30pm.
