This Thanksgiving, the 9-1 TCU Horned Frogs will go up against the 6-5 Texas Longhorns in the only Thanksgiving Day college football game involving a ranked team. The Horned Frogs are currently the 5th ranked team in the nation and will need a convincing win this Thursday if they want to continue to be considered for the first ever College Football Playoff.
TCU has come quite some way since last season when they went 4-8. They began the season well enough with a ten point defeat to 12th ranked LSU, but their season quickly spiraled out of control in mid-October when they lost three in a row and five of their final six games. One of those losses was a 30-7 blowout at the hands of the Longhorns.
Texas fared a little better last season, but they began 1-2 and that was enough to sway the institution to push Mack Brown from the head coaching gig. This year, Charlie Strong has taken over and the team has struggled at time, but they will be going bowling this year as they’ve won their last three games to get to six wins on the season.
TCU has done considerably better this year than six wins, currently sitting at 9-1 with their only blemish a loss on the road to Baylor. That loss could end up being a crippling blow to the team if Baylor can win out, but for now, the Horned Frogs are right in the thick of the College Football Playoff race.
The Longhorns won’t be a pushover on Thanksgiving, all the more reason that this game could be particularly exciting. For Horned Frog fans looking to make the trek to Royal Texas Memorial Stadium, make sure to check out Hipmunk for a look into Austin’s vivacious southern hospitality. Hipmunk has hotel deals in Austin for as little as $89, and you’ll be able to find either a train ride or a cheap flight to Austin Texas if you don’t want to make the three hour drive from Fort Worth to Austin.
Tickets begin at $46 according to TiqIQ.com, so it’s possible you could get a ticket, a hotel, and a train ride to and from the game for less than $500. That’s not too high a price to pay to see TCU and Texas continue their Texas-sized rivalry, and it’s a great opportunity to see a team with a shot at the national championship this year play in person.
