The Kalamazoo Growlers of the Northwoods League made a little history Saturday night.
Now, I’m going to leave the specifics to the folks with the Elias Sports Bureau, but I’m going to wager that this feat has never happened. While fans were lined up to meet Ozzie Guillen, the Growlers, who last made news when they announced they were going to wear jerseys made of selfies, sent eight different pitchers to the mound to face off against the Kenosha Kingfish.
But that’s not the crazy part.
Those eight pitchers? All position players. And, outside of one rough inning…the guys didn’t do that poorly. Sure, the Growlers lost 7-4, but considering a majority of those runs came during a six-run third…that’s not too shabby.
And just why did the Growlers resort to using only position players on Saturday? In back-to-back extra innings affairs Thursday and Friday, the team used seven different pitchers. So, yeah…the staff was a little depleted.
