FORT WORTH, TEXAS — Oscar De La Hoya’s FIGHT NIGHT @ SUNDANCE SQUARE has become a boxing tradition in downtown Fort Worth over the past six years. Now, De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions is set to return for the 7th time on Friday, May 21st when the Tecate Texas Boxing Series takes center-ring.
A festive outdoor arena setting in the Chisholm Trail Mural Parking Lot (corner of 4th St. & Main St.) will be the site of the event, which will feature a seven-bout professional fight card, starting at 7:30 p.m. The event will be nationally televised on the Telefutura network.
Slated for the ten-round, lightweight main event will be one of the world’s top undefeated prospects – Sharif Bogere (15-0, 9 KO’s), of Uganda. Sharif will be facing veteran Columbian boxer, Ilido Julio (40 -17-1, 35 KO’s) in the feature bout. Six other fights are scheduled on the card, including a rematch between Fort Worth’s Arthur Trevino (5-4-3) and Laredo’s Eddie Ramirez (4-2). Additionally, top Jr. Middleweight prospect, Jermell Charlo (11-0, Houston), will be taking on Dallas’ Josh Burns (3-8-5).
According to event promoter, Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions, Bogere is considered to be one of boxing’s up-and-coming superstars
“Sharif (Bogere) is a terrific action fighter that can box and punch,” said the former 7-time World Champion and now promoter, De La Hoya. “The fans will see, he’s an explosive and very exciting fighter, but will be in with solid veteran in Julio. So he (Bogere) will have to be at his best to win and move closer to world title contention.”
As for returning to Fort Worth for the seventh time, De La Hoya is thrilled to be back. “It’s turned out to be a nice tradition for the boxing fans in Fort Worth and also — for Golden Boy Promotions,” he noted. “Sundance Square is such a beautiful area and makes for a really unique setting for a boxing event. Each year we get a lot of great feedback from the television networks and also the viewers. It looks terrific on TV. More importantly for the fans at the event, it’s a fun atmosphere with lots of energy.”
The six-bout undercard will feature Fort Worth Jr. Lightweight, Arthur Trevino (5-4-3) in a rematch with Laredo’s Eddie Ramirez (4-2). Trevino and Ramirez fought last April 3rd in Corpus Christi, with Ramirez scoring a shocking first-round TKO over a stunned Trevino.
“I was really surprised the referee stopped the fight so quick,” said Trevino, who also fought on the March 13th event at Cowboys Stadium that featured Manny Pacquiao vs Joshua Clottey. “I told my trainer, Vince Reyes, that I wanted a rematch with Ramirez as soon as possible. There’s no way I thought I should have lost that fight like that, and now I want to prove it was a fluke.”
Other Dallas-Fort Worth fighters on the card include; Josh Burns, Sammy Sanchez, Steve Gutierrez, Jose Ortiz and Kender Halili. See “FIGHT CARD” for their opponents and bout information.
