Temple clinches the East after taking care of UConn

Mike Fisher

We knew what was on the line in this game all week and Temple ended up having to take care of it themselves after the USF wrecked UCF. No offense to UConn, but after what Temple did to Memphis last week, I knew this would be a blowout. Jahad Thomas open up the scoring with his 16th rushing touchdown of the season and he has scored one in every game except for last week vs Memphis. PJ Walker would find Romond Deloatch for his 18th passing touchdown of the season after Austin Jones added a field goal on the previous drive. Jahad Thomas, who would finish with 119 rushing yards, broke a 60-ard run for his second touchdown of the game and rushed for 100 yards a fifth time this year. UConn would break the shutout with a field goal, but it wasn’t nearly enough has the Owls cruised to a 27-3 victory.

The defense was unbelievable tonight holding UConn to under 150 yards of total offense and only allowed nine rushing yards. The Temple defense also forced two turnovers and one of them was a spectacular leaping interception by Sean Chandler, who has been solid all year long. Tyler Matakevich continued to make plays all over the field, finishing with 11 tackles(4 for a loss) and this win couldn’t be more fitting for senior day. Temple is at its best when their defense is unstoppable and they’re even better when the offense plays at the same level.

With this win, Temple has its first 10-win since 1979 and they clinched the East division of American Athletic Conference and will be heading to the American Conference Championship to face Houston on December 5th. The winner of the Championship could be set up for a major bowl game because it looks like American Conference champ will be the highest ranked team out of the other group-of-five schools. Meaning either Temple or Houston will be playing in one of the New Years Six bowl games and that will be the Peach Bowl or the Fiesta Bowl.
