Just three days after being embarrassed by Houston at home, Temple pulls off a thrilling upset against #23 Connecticut that came down to the final seconds. Knotted up at 53, Josh Brown hit a spinning jumper with 2.6 seconds left to clinch the game for the Owls and gave Coach Fran Dunphy his 200th win at Temple. Dunphy is one of five Divison-1 coaches to win 200 games at two different schools. Coach Dunphy always seems to have a flare for the dramatic when it comes to milestone wins for him and beating a ranked UConn was quite a way to get his 200th win at Temple.
The hero of the game, Josh Brown, finished with 11 points, 5 assists, 5 rebounds, and added two steals. Jaylen Bond had a nice game posting a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Quenton DeCosey led Temple in scoring with 15 points, including shooting a perfect three for three from beyond the arc. After having zero players in double-figures versus Houston, Temple had four against UConn factoring in Devin Coleman contributing 14 points off the bench. Coach Fran Dunphy threw out a different lineup tonight to send a message to his team so we saw Devin Coleman and Obi Enechionyia come off the bench in this one. Enechionyia continued to struggle, only managing one basket in the contest and has a combined 11 points in his last two games.
One of the key differences in this game was Temple was able to knock down the three-point shot in this game, hitting 7 of 18 from beyond arc. It also helps when you’re defense holds your opponent to 31% shooting, which makes the job a lot easier. Temple still needs to shoot better, only managing to make 38% of their shots against UConn, but they were able to makes shots in the key moments.
Would like to say congratulations to Coach Dunphy on his 200th win at Temple, quite a way to do it with the upset victory over Connecticut. It’s Temple’s second win over an AP Top 25 team this year, with their first coming against Cincinnati. Let’s hope the momentum carries over to Saturday’s home matchup against East Carolina at 9 PM.
