I did this exact same post last year and while C. J. Spiller didn’t really work out, you can’t say I didn’t nail this prediction. One out of five ain’t bad, right? So let’s dabble into this exercise again, shall we? The needs on this roster are significant: guard, receiver, outside linebacker, defensive tackle, defensive end, tight end, kicker. That’s in no specific order. Here’s ten guys I’d love the Saints to go after (in no specific order):
Robert Ayers, DE, New York Giants
Maybe he’ll get a huge contract for notching 9.5 sacks last year, maybe not. But while he’s 31 by the time the season starts, he played ridiculously well last year. The best year of the former 1st rounder’s career. He never lived up to his draft status in Denver but he turned into a pretty good player. Is he a dynamite starter? Maybe not. But he’s a huge upgrade to the Saints on passing downs and he can hold his own in run defense.
Ladarius Green, TE, San Diego Chargers
He’s been on every Saints fan’s radar as a perfect fit with Brees to maximize his receiving potential. This suggestion is out there and one that excites most Saints fans.
Ramon Foster, G, Pittsburgh Steelers
Osemele is going to cost too much, Mathis is too old and Alex Boone looked on decline this year. That’s why Foster is more appealing to me and he would be an immediate upgrade at guard over anything the Saints had last year. He was solid in all areas last season.
Brandon Mebane, DT, Seattle Seahawks
I always viewed Mebane as a really underrated player in that Seahawks defense. A well rounded player that could really help against the run while pushing the pocket a little bit.
Jermaine Kearse, WR, Seattle Seahawks
He blocks well, he’s physical and he fits the Saints offense pretty well. I think he makes a lot of sense.
Tahir Whitehead, OLB, Detroit Lions
Young player that excelled in coverage for the Lions last year out of nowhere. I’m sure the Lions will try to keep him, he’s a good young player. It would be nice to return the favor for Tyrunn Walker. He’ll be 26 in April.
Patrick Robinson, CB, San Diego Chargers
Why not offer him the same contract they offered him last offseason? The Saints wanted him back and he played well in San Diego last year. The Saints could use him behind Breaux and Lewis.
Chris Long, DE, St. Louis Rams (yes I know they are in LA now)
I still think the Saints should go after him. If he can get healthy he’s a beast. High character player, too.
Brandon Brooks, G, Houston Texans
He moves well and he’s a good pass blocker. Exactly what the Saints need.
Nigel Bradham, OLB, Buffalo Bills
He was bad last year, but he’s only 26 and he played well in 2014. He’s an agile linebacker that’s good in coverage. Seems like a decent fit.
