What to look for in the schedule? The bye week, for one. Week 4 is as early as it possibly gets; earlier than there should be byes, in my opinion, and I doubt the Titans were happy to get it.
Prime time games are another highlight; back before Sunday Ticket (and Game Rewind), they were the only guaranteed way I had of seeing the Titans. The Titans just get the mandatory one, and it’s in Jacksonville again. I wasn’t too surprised the Titans were playing the Jaguars so the NFL got both teams out of the way on the same night, but I was hoping for a game in Nashville this time since home field is more important in a short week.
With a couple potential cold weather opponents, I was hoping the Titans would avoid playing any December road games. Didn’t work on that account, as they play at the Jets and Patriots in Weeks 14 and 15. Over the past six seasons, the Titans have played four outdoor road games where the gametime temperature was cooler than 40 degrees: 59-0 at New England, 34-14 at Kansas City, 55-7 at Green Bay, and 51-28 at Denver. My early over/under on Patriots points that game is 41.5, and I’m not sure I’m joking.
The other thing you hope for is a good mix of road and home games. On this account, the NFL did a pretty lousy job, I thought. It’s goofy as heck that the Titans have three two-game road trips, and completely insane that they play four consecutive games at home. I know making a schedule is hard, and the NFL has to balance a lot of factors in creating theirs, but I would yell at the goofy programmers if Madden spit out this schedule. That the NFL went with this over other options is, well, a significant departure from what I would have expected.
My offended sensibilities notwithstanding, the opponents are the opponents and the schedule is the schedule. Make your plans, book your travel, and go play the games.
