With their natural fifth round selection, 142nd overall, in the 2011 NFL draft, the Tennessee Titans selected Karl Klug, defensive tackle, University of Iowa.
Klug started the last two years for Kirk Ferentz’s Hawkeyes at defensive tackle. A bit undersized for an NFL defensive tackle at 6’3″, 274-pounds, he has good quickness and, like most Iowa players, pretty good technique and instincts. He played on the same very productive line as teammates Christian Ballard and Adrian Clayborn, who each went before him.
The book on Klug is that he’s best suited as a 4-3 defensive tackle in a one-gap schemes, playing best in obvious passing situations. He doesn’t have great power moves and can’t hold up well at the point of attack. He’s not quite as undersized as former Titans UDFA acquisition and fellow Iowa DT Mitch King, but doesn’t seem to be a significantly better prospect. Frankly, with the DTs the Titans already have, I’m not sure how, or if, Klug fits into the mix.
