With their own first round pick in the 2012 NFL draft, twentieth overall, the Tennessee Titans supplemented their receiving corps by selecting Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor.
Wright was the favored target for the draft’s second overall pick, Robert Griffin III. He had a monster senior season with 108 catches for 1,663 yards and 14 touchdowns, and good productivity every season with at least 50 catches. He ran a poor 40-time at the Combine of 4.61 but ran in the high 4.4s at Baylor’s Pro Day and generally played faster than that on tape.
In yesterday’s post, I described him as probably a better version of Nate Washington. He has excellent deep speed and is probably a bit more explosive after the catch, but is better suited to play the slot than as another outside receiver. Could the Titans use even more 3WR sets than they used last year? Does his acquisition make Washington expendable as early as this offseason?
I’m not a big fan of this pick. Wright’s likely trouble playing and struggles against press coverage mean the Titans’ receiving corps means the Titans will still be lacking a key element if Kenny Britt is unavailable for any reason or slow to recover from his injury. I thought the Titans would be more than happy to draft David DeCastro to fill the glaring right guard need or decide they liked one of the defensive ends like Whitney Mercilus or Nick Perry.
