The Tennessee Titans (2-1) will be seeking their third win of the season as they play host to the Denver Broncos (1-2) at LP Field tomorrow afternoon.
Coming off an impressive road victory against the G-Men, the Titans will need another solid performance in order to secure the W and keep pace with fellow AFC South foes Indianapolis and Houston; who are also 2-1 and looking to attain supremacy in the early stages of the divisional race.
Up next, a preview and a prediction for tomorrow’s Titans/Broncos clash.
Another 3-4 challenge for Vince Young
In recent battles against teams that run the 3-4 defense, VY has experienced his share of struggles. Most recently, by all accounts, he looked confused during his well-documented abysmal performance against the Steelers a couple of weeks ago.
No disrespect to Denver’s rendition of the 3-4, but they’re anything but the Steelers when it comes to the league’s most dominant defensive units. They may run the same scheme, but as indicated by their 18th overall ranking in defense, the results have been nothing close to similar.
Therefore, despite his adversities facing the 3-4 defense, I’m expecting a solid/but-not-spectacular performance from VY on Sunday.
Stopping the Kyle Orton aerial express
As alluded to in this week’s questions and answers exchange, the Titans will be facing a pretty formidable passing attack on Sunday.
Believe it or not, Kyle Orton is currently ranked #2 in the statistical category of passing yards in 2010. The stat is a bit hard to believe considering that this is the same Kyle Orton who was never able to secure a firm grasp on the starting QB position in Chicago as that franchise deemed guys such as Rex Grossman and most recently, Jay Cutler as better options.
Even in his current home, with Denver trading for Brady Quinn and drafting Tim Tebow last offseason, Orton has once again faced a situation where there’s the threat of him being replaced. However, Orton has continued to persevere and put up solid numbers despite being the QB version of the ugly duckling.
To contain Orton, the Titans will need to get a solid pass-rush from their no-name but effective defensive line unit and receive a solid outing from rookie Alterraun Verner, who will be making his first start at CB in place of an injured Jason McCourty.
Prediction Time!
As they did against NY last week, I’m expecting Chuck Cecil’s Titan defense to bend-but-don’t break as they allow Orton to get his share of yards but in the end, do an adequate job of consistently keeping the high-octane Denver passing attack out of the end zone.
On offense, as I stated earlier, I’m expecting another consistent performance from VY as well as the obligatory Chris Johnson score or two with yet another beyond the century mark rushing effort serving as the proverbial icing on the cake.
