A four-run third inning for Maryland proved to be too much to overcome for Florida State as the teams met for the final time ever at the ACC Tournament on Thursday. FSU mounted a late rally, but came up on the losing end of a 5-3 score.
Jose Cuas’ two-run double in the third got the scoring started as Maryland jumped on the Seminoles, 2-0. Outfielder Tim Lewis would add a RBI single later in the frame.
After Maryland extended its lead to 5-0 with a run in the bottom of the seventh, Florida State did all of its damage in the top of the eighth. A single by John Nogowski accounted for the only RBI of the day for the Seminoles. In the inning, outfielders Josh Delph and D.J. Stewart each came in to score on wild pitches to cut the Maryland lead to two. In the top of the ninth however, FSU would go down in order.
On the mound, Mike Shawaryn was lights out for the Terrapins. Shawaryn yielded just two hits in seven shutout innings while allowing three walks to improve to 10-3 on the year. Florida State starter Mike Compton was able to overcome a shaky third inning by going 6 1/3 innings and allowing seven hits. Compton allowed five runs, but only two were earned as the sophomore took the loss for the Seminoles to fall to 7-2 on the season.
Florida State managed just four hits on the day while Cuas and Brandon Lowe each had a pair of hits and each scored a run for the Terrapins. Cuas drove in three of Maryland’s five runs on the day.
For FSU to advance to Sunday’s ACC Championship, the Seminoles will need to defeat Virginia on Saturday and have North Carolina collect a pair of victories, over Virginia on Friday and Maryland on Saturday.
