The Cincinnati Bengals pulled off the type of free agency coup today that would make the Miami Heat jealous. The Bengals signed Terrell Owens, perhaps this year’s most sought after free agent, to a one-year deal, reportedly worth $2 million, with incentives that could make the deal worth as much as $4 million.
League “insiders” have been speculating for weeks that the Colts were looking to bring Owens into the fold in hopes of replacing Anthony “Stone Hands” Gonzalez as the 4th WR on the Colts’ depth chart. Attempts to reach Bill Polian have been unsuccessful, but a person walking passed Colts’ facilities this afternoon speculated that Mr. Polian might be short with someone today.

Where do the Colts go from here? No one knows for sure. Without the addition of Owens, the Colts will be forced to rely on a young, promising group of receiver that don’t cause problems in the locker room and don’t air their laundry with the media. One has to wonder which WR will be doing sit ups in their driveway this off-season, though malcontent and likely camp hold-out (and open competition participant) Reggie Wayne seems like the most likely candidate.
As for the Bengals, they add Owens to an already all-star cast of WRs, featuring Chad Ochocinco and Antonio Bryan. This will give the Bengals three WRs known for their soft hands and subtle route-running ability. Carson Palmer is said to be thrilled as the prospect of someone other than Ochocinco undermining him this year. “Variety is the spice of life,” he could have been quoted as saying, if we asked him.
