At 930 this evening (roughly), the Twins came to terms with right hander Kevin Correia to a 2 year, 10 million dollar deal. Let’s let the Twins put the most positive spin on this signing that could possibly be made.
Correia posted a 4.21 ERA with 89 strikeouts and 46 walks in 171 innings with the Pirates last season. The 32-year-old, who had a 51.2 percent ground-ball rate, which ranked tied for seventh in the National League, made 28 starts and four relief appearances in 2012.
Well well well! SEVENTH in the NL for ground ball rate! What a stud! And only 89 strikeouts! Less than a 2-1 K/BB ratio! He’s a fly ball pitcher who allows a lot of contact that just dealt the two best outfield defenders on the team. How can this NOT work out? The nice thing is, he is an improvement over the current rotation. Only 6 pitchers have a lower K rate than Correia, and three of them (Carl Pavano, Nick Blackburn and Scott Diamond) were with the Twins last year. And they signed this guy, the second coming of Nick Blackburn, for TWO YEARS.
All of that and the thing that kills me is the time of night that this news came down. The news filtered out around 930 on Monday night, which implies that the two sides, the Twins and Correia’s people stayed late to make sure they hammered this out. They wanted to make sure they got this done. They wanted to make sure that Kevin freaking Correia didn’t slip through their fingers. This was a big deal.
Is this really where the Twins are at?
