UConn Crushes Texas Southern 62-3

UConn quarterback Zach Frazer watches as Jordan Todman runs off of Anthony Sherman's block in the first half against Texas Southern on a play that set up Michael Smith's touchdown reception.

The UConn Huskies did exactly what they need to do on Saturday afternoon at Rentschler Field against the Texas Southern Tigers after a poor performance at the Big House last weekend. They went out and completely dominated both sides of the ball.

The Huskies scored on their first five possessions of the game as they rolled to a 62-3 win over Texas Southern in front of 37,359 on a beautiful day for football at the Rent.

UConn quarterback Zach Frazer watches as Jordan Todman runs off of Anthony Sherman's block in the first half against Texas Southern on a play that set up Michael Smith's touchdown reception. Jordan Todman led the way for the Huskies with his second straight game of rushing for over 100 yards. Todman finished with 15 carries for 151 yards and three touchdowns. His longest run was 53 yards although he did fumble on it but it was recovered by Anthony Sherman who did a great job of following up on the play.

After a rough week for Zach Frazer and his receivers, he came back to complete 6-of-9 passes for two touchdowns. His three incomplete passes were overthrown but overall the offense looked better as a whole. They put up 444 total yards of offense with 307 of that coming on the ground. Todman and Robbie Frey, who finished with 101 yards and two touchdowns, combined for 195 yards alone in the first half.

The defensive effort was much improved as well as they were easily able to overmatch the smaller Tigers. Texas Southern finished with just 169 yards of total offense with most of that coming against the Huskies second-team defense.

The Tigers were their own worst enemy on Saturday afternoon as it seemed like everytime they’d make a big play, it would get called back because of a penalty. TSU finished with 11 penalties that went for 77 yards.

There’s really not much to say here. UConn did what it needed to do on Saturday afternoon. Now they need to get themselves ready for the Temple Owls.

Offensive Player of the Game:

UConn running back Jordan Todman had 15 carries for 151 yards and three touchdowns. All of that came in the first half.

Defensive Players of the Game:

UConn's Sio Moore attempts to grab a pass intended for Texas Southern's Joe Anderson, right, during the first half. The co-defensive players of the game are UConn linebackers Sio Moore and Greg Lloyd. Moore, who saw more time with Scott Lutrus out, stepped and had six tackles and an interception. Lloyd wins honors for the second straight week as he had six tackles and also picked up his first career interception.

Turning Point(s) of the Game:

The opening kickoff was the turning point. UConn went down and kicked a field goal and then scored on their next three possessions in the first quarter to put the game out of reach.

Offensive Notes:

Zach Frazer played only in the first half and was 6-of-9 for 104 yards and two touchdowns. Redshirt freshman QB Michael Box was 2-of-5 for 30 yards. Todman had 15 carries for 151 yards and three touchdowns while Robbie Frey also went over 100 yards with 101 and added two touchdowns. Tight end John Delahunt led all receivers with 46 yards. Kashif Moore had two catches for 39 yards and a touchdown. Michael Smith had two catches for 14 yards and his first career touchdown. Dwayne Difton had one catch for 27 yards.

Defensive Notes:

Lawrence Wilson led all UConn tacklers with seven. Moore had six tackles, including two for a loss and also had an interception. Lloyd had six tackles, including one for a loss. Jerome Williams had five tackles including one for a loss.

Special Teams Notes:

Chad Christen’s first kickoff went out-of-bounds and drew the ire of head coach Randy Edsall. Not one of his next ten kickoffs went out-of-bounds. He also made his first career extra point. Dave Teggart hit both of his field goal attempts and was 7-of-7 on extra point attempts. Gary Wilburn fumbled a punt return that was recovered by Texas Southern. He got an earful as well from Edsall and wasn’t seen returning punts for the rest of the game.

Injuries:

Kendall Reyes left with an ankle injury in the third quarter and was removed from the game for precautionary reasons. Knowing Randy Edsall and the non-talk about injuries, this is all we’ll hear about it.

Things to Work On:

  • With the offense looking much better this week, Frazer needs to continue to work on his timing with the receivers.
  • The defense also rebounded from a poor performance and needs to continue to work on their tackling.
  • Gary Wilburn needs to work on catching the bull during punt returns.
  • Get Scott Lutrus and Kendall Reyes healthy.
