That Time Ronnie Woo Woo Met Steve Bartman

If Ronnie “Woo Woo” Wickers is the unofficial mascot of the Chicago Cubs, Steve Bartman might just be the unofficial face of their failures.

Prior to the team’s Game Six tilt against the then-Florida Marlins in 2003, Wickers spent time outside Wrigley Field with the man who would end up being the scourge of the franchise.

That’s right, a mere three hours before Bartman would interfere (or not) with an eighth inning foul ball off the bat of Luis Castillo, the two men who most personify opposite ends of the fan spectrum met.

“I saw Steve Bartman before he went to the game that day,” The 74-year-old told The Hall. “He said ‘Ronnie, I’m a Cubs fan like you…I’ve got my earphones so I can listen to the plays’. I said, ‘we gonna win because you’re here, buddy’.”

How weird is it to think that the team’s most loyal fan is, quite possibly, the last Cubs fan to say something nice to Bartman?

“The way it went, the way it went…it’s not his fault though.” Wickers continued. “Any fan would try to get that ball.”
